ALBAN BAGBIN SWORN IN AS SPEAKER OF GHANA'S 9TH PARLIAMENT
Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been officially sworn in as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. The swearing-in ceremony took place on January 7, 2025, following his endorsement by President-elect John Dramani Mahama. This marks Bagbin’s re-election, solidifying his prominent role in Ghana’s parliamentary history, having previously served as Speaker during the 8th Parliament.
The proceedings commenced with Cassiel Ato Forson, the newly appointed Majority Leader, moving the motion for Bagbin’s nomination. “I move that Hon Alban Bagbin do take the chair of this House as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament,” Forson announced on the parliamentary floor.
The motion was seconded by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, although not without contention. Afenyo-Markin raised objections, citing inadequate consultation by the President-elect regarding Bagbin’s endorsement. However, the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, quickly dismissed the concerns, stating they were irrelevant to the formalities of seconding the motion.
Following these proceedings, the Chief Justice, Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo, administered the Oath of Office, officially confirming Bagbin as Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, Bagbin emphasized the need for unity and assured all members of his commitment to impartial leadership for the effective operation of Parliament.
This event is a historic moment for Ghana’s legislature, as Bagbin continues to guide a Parliament with a strong majority held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
